The Contour Daybed is a bold architectural statement by premium outdoor furniture brand HALDANE. Opulent but restrained, this future icon by acclaimed designer Haldane Martin is distinguished by its graceful circular geometries and oversized volumes inspired by organic shapes and body positivity.
The Contour Daybed is a luxurious statement in alfresco leisure. This self-contained feature piece sits comfortably by itself outdoors and is an expression of the brand’s ethos of blending culture and nature. It also underscores Haldane’s commitment to design innovation and manufacture.
Colour, form and material are integral to the identity of the Contour Daybed. The robust framework is Marine grade stainless-steel (SS316) tubing. Luxury and durability being key, Haldane uses Crevin Fiji IMP, a high-end jacquard weave fabric made from partly recycled materials. Balancing sustainability and performance, this uniquely textured, bleach-cleanable, UV-resistant fabric offers exceptional indoor-outdoor adaptability with an internal laminated water-resistant lining.
A similar attention to quality and resilience informs the high-quality upholstery foam, which provides a memorable seating experience and shape that lasts. The hardwearing canopy fabric is by Screentex. The open-basket weave design of this long-lasting fabric ensures optimum transparency and appropriate modulation of natural light.
The Contour Daybed is offered in eight fabric colours and 22 powder-coated colour options. The tonal range is consistent with the brand’s fresh palette, which references Cape Town’s magical chromatic union of sea, land and sky. The sunburnt greens and pale sandy fawn colours of the West Coast provided particular inspiration, as well as affirmation for a proof-of-concept outdoor shoot introducing the daybed.
Haldane Martin’s recombinant approach to design is evident in the newest addition to his eponymous brand’s expanding portfolio of outdoor furniture pieces. The Contour Daybed tips it’s hat to Ubald Klug’s layered Terrazza sofa of the 1970s. True to his alchemical way of working, Haldane Martin metabolised this reference – instinctually and purposefully – until a final prototype was derived.
The canopy is an integral element of the Contour Daybed. It was inspired by a honeymoon visit to Mauritius, where outdoor daybeds shaded by thatch are ubiquitous. It prompted a curious question for the designer: Can a furniture piece not express the ambition and independence of micro-architecture? The Contour Daybed provides a succinct answer, a resounding yes.
